Impact on Rhino Conservation and Eco-Tourism
This 5 Days Kidepo Wildlife Safari plays a critical role in the restoration of Uganda’s biodiversity, with a specific focus on the return of the rhinoceros:
- Direct Support for Rhino Reintroduction: By stopping at the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary en route to Kidepo, your visit provides the vital funding needed for the 24-hour security and breeding programs of Uganda’s only wild rhinos. This is the cornerstone of the long-term plan to reintroduce rhinos back into Kidepo Valley and Murchison Falls National Parks.
- Securing Remote Wilderness: Kidepo Valley is one of Africa’s most remote parks. Tourism revenue provides the economic justification to maintain its status as a protected area, preventing encroachment and ensuring a safe haven for lions, cheetahs, and massive buffalo herds.
- Community Empowerment (The Ik & Karamojong): We prioritize cultural encounters that benefit local indigenous groups. Your visit supports community-led tourism initiatives, providing an alternative income to cattle raiding and poaching.
- Carbon-Efficient Travel: Despite the distance, we utilize optimized routes and encourage group travel to minimize the carbon footprint per guest while exploring the rugged northern frontier.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
- Is rhino tracking included in the Kidepo safari? Yes. Since Kidepo Valley National Park does not yet have wild rhinos, this 5-day itinerary includes a strategic stop at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary to allow you to track the “Big Five” in full.
- How long is the drive to Kidepo Valley National Park? The drive is long (approximately 8-10 hours), which is why we break it up with a visit to the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary. The journey offers a unique look at the changing landscapes of Uganda, from the lush central region to the semi-arid north.
- What wildlife is unique to Kidepo? Kidepo is the only park in Uganda where you can find the Cheetah, Caracal, and Aardwolf. It is also famous for having one of the largest single herds of Buffalo in Africa.
- What is the best time to visit Kidepo? The dry season (September to March) is best for wildlife viewing, as animals congregate around the few remaining water sources in the Narus Valley.
