1 Day Gorilla Trekking Uganda: The Short Safari Itinerary

Embark on the most exhilarating wildlife encounter in Africa with our 1-day gorilla trekking Uganda expedition. This short but intensive tour is designed for travelers with limited time who don’t want to miss the chance to stand face-to-face with the endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.

Itinerary at a Glance

  • Start/End Point: Kigali, Rwanda (or Kisoro, Uganda)
  • Destination: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
  • Activity: Mountain Gorilla Trekking
  • Transport: 4×4 Safari Land Cruiser / Van

03:30 AM | Early Morning Pickup from Kigali

Your adventure begins with a very early start. Your professional driver-guide will pick you up from your hotel in Kigali or Kigali International Airport. We head north through Rwanda’s rolling hills toward the Cyanika or Katuna border.

06:00 AM | Border Crossing & Arrival in Uganda

After brief immigration formalities, you will enter the “Pearl of Africa.” The drive offers stunning views of the Virunga Volcanoes and the terraced hills of southwestern Uganda.

07:30 AM | Pre-Trek Briefing at Park Headquarters

Upon arrival at the park headquarters (Bwindi or Mgahinga), you will join other travelers for a briefing by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) rangers.

Here, you’ll learn the “dos and don’ts” of gorilla tracking, such as maintaining a 7-meter distance and avoiding flash photography.

08:30 AM | The Gorilla Trekking Experience

Led by expert trackers and armed rangers, you will head into the ancient rainforest. The trek can last anywhere from 2 to 6 hours depending on the location of the habituated gorilla family. The terrain can be steep and muddy, but the reward is incomparable.

11:00 AM – 01:00 PM | One Hour with the Gentle Giants

Once the gorillas are located, you have exactly one hour to observe them. Watch the silverback protect the group, mothers nursing infants, and juveniles playing in the canopy.

This is the highlight of your 1-day Uganda safari.

02:00 PM | Lunch and Certificate Awarding

After trekking back to the start point, you will be awarded a Gorilla Trekking Certificate to commemorate your achievement.

Enjoy a packed lunch or a hot meal at a nearby lodge while overlooking the misty forest.

03:30 PM | Transfer Back to Kigali

Begin your return journey across the border. Your guide will drop you back at your preferred location in Kigali or the airport in time for an evening flight.
