About Bwindi National Park: An Ancient Emerald Wilderness
Located in southwestern Uganda at the edge of the Albertine Rift, Bwindi National Park is a place where time seems to stand still. Known as the “Impenetrable Forest,” this UNESCO World Heritage site spans 321 square kilometers of rugged mountain rainforest, believed to be one of the few African forests to survive the last Ice Age.
The Sanctuary of the Mountain Gorillas
The crown jewel of Bwindi National Park is its population of mountain gorillas. It is one of the only places on Earth where these majestic creatures thrive in their natural habitat.
- Global Significance: Bwindi is home to roughly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorilla population.
- Habituated Groups: The park features several sectors—Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo—each hosting habituated gorilla families that travelers can visit through regulated trekking.

The Batwa Cultural Heritage
Long before Bwindi National Park was gazetted as a national park, it was the home of the Batwa Pygmies. Known as the “Keepers of the Forest,” the Batwa lived in harmony with the wildlife for millennia. Today, visitors can join the Batwa Trail to learn about ancient hunting techniques, medicinal plants, and the rich folklore of the forest’s original inhabitants.
