Detailed Itinerary: 3 Day Kampala Gorilla Tour

Day 1: Kampala to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Your 3 day kampala gorilla tour begins early in the morning. Your Active Uganda Safaris driver-guide will pick you up at 6:30 AM from your hotel or residence in Kampala to beat the early city traffic.

Heading southwest, the route takes you through the beautiful rolling hills of Mpigi and the open savannahs of southwestern Uganda. Our first brief stop is at the Uganda Equator line in Kayabwe for standard geographic demonstrations and photographic moments.

We will continue through Masaka and stop for a hot lunch in Mbarara City at the Igongo Cultural Centre. From there, the drive transitions into the breathtaking, terraced Kigezi highlands (often called the “Switzerland of Africa”) before descending into the boundary of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Check into your lodge for dinner, relaxation, and preparation for the big day ahead.

  • Travel Time: Approximately 8 to 9 hours.
  • Meal Plan: Lunch and Dinner.
  • Accommodation Options: Buhoma Lodge (Luxury) / Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge (Mid-range) / Buhoma Community Rest Camp (Budget).

Day 2: Gorilla Tracking in Bwindi Forest & Community Walk

After an early breakfast, gather at the Uganda Wildlife Authority park headquarters by 7:30 AM with your passport, tracking voucher, packed lunch, and plenty of drinking water. You will receive a thorough briefing from the lead park rangers regarding gorilla trekking rules, safety protocols, and what to expect in the rainforest.

You will be assigned to a specific habituated mountain gorilla family based on your general physical fitness level. Led by armed rangers and experienced trackers, you will step into the dense jungle canopy. Trekking can take anywhere from 2 to 6 hours depending on where the primates nested the previous night.

Once your designated gorilla family is located, you will spend exactly 1 hour with them. Watch the gentle giants forage, interact, play, and groom each other just meters away.

In the late afternoon, return to the lodge to freshen up. Later, join a guided community walk to interact with the local Batwa indigenous community, learning about their traditional forest-dwelling heritage, medicinal plants, and cultural dances.

  • Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner.
  • Accommodation Options: Buhoma Lodge (Luxury) / Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge (Mid-range) / Buhoma Community Rest Camp (Budget).

Day 3: Return Drive from Bwindi back to Kampala

Enjoy an early breakfast surrounded by the sounds of the misty forest. Checkout of the lodge and begin your return road transfer back north toward the capital.

As we wind through the scenic hills, we will make a stop in Rukungiri or Mbarara for lunch. We will also pause briefly at the drum-making stalls in Mpigi to see local craftsmanship before arriving back in Kampala or Entebbe International Airport in the early evening for your outbound flight. This marks the conclusion of your memorable 3 day kampala gorilla tour.

  • Travel Time: Approximately 8 to 9 hours.
  • Meal Plan: Breakfast and Lunch.
