Volcanoes National Park (Parc National des Volcans) is located in the far northwestern corner of Rwanda, bordering Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is the heart of the Virunga Massif, a range of dormant volcanoes where most of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas reside.

What to Expect
- The Briefing: Every morning at 7:00 AM, trekkers gather at the Kinigi headquarters. You’ll be briefed on safety, gorilla etiquette, and assigned to a family group based on your fitness level.
- The Trek: This isn’t a walk in the park; it’s a hike through dense bamboo forests and steep volcanic terrain. Treks can last anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours, depending on where the family has moved.
- The Encounter: Once you locate the gorillas, you get one hour to observe them. Seeing a massive silverback, infants playing, or mothers grooming is a profound experience that stays with you forever.
Essential Tips
- Permits: A trekking permit costs $1,500 USD for foreign non-residents. They sell out months in advance, so booking early is non-negotiable.
- Fitness: While you don’t need to be an athlete, a moderate level of fitness makes the hike significantly more enjoyable.
- Gear: Pack waterproof hiking boots, long-sleeved shirts (to protect against stinging nettles), a light rain jacket, and gardening gloves for gripping vines.
- Health: You cannot trek if you have a cold or flu, as gorillas are highly susceptible to human illnesses.
3-Day Gorilla Trekking Itinerary
This 3-day plan is the classic “express” safari designed to get you from the airport to the gorillas and back with maximum efficiency.
Day 1: Arrival & Transfer to Musanze
- Morning/Afternoon: Arrive at Kigali International Airport.
- City Tour: Take a short drive through Kigali, including a somber but essential visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial to understand Rwanda’s history and resilience.
- Transfer: Drive 2.5–3 hours north to Musanze/Kinigi. Enjoy the “Land of a Thousand Hills” scenery as you head toward the volcanic peaks.
- Evening: Check into your lodge, relax, and prepare your gear for the following morning.
Day 2: The Gorilla Trek
- Morning: Early breakfast at the lodge. Head to the park headquarters in Kinigi by 7:00 AM for your briefing.
- Trekking: Head into the forest with your ranger and guide. Spend your hour with the gorillas, then hike back out to the trailhead.
- Afternoon: After a late lunch, choose an optional activity: a visit to the Iby’iwacu Cultural Village to experience traditional dance, crafts, and Rwandan history, or simply rest at the lodge to soak in the views.
Day 3: Golden Monkeys & Departure
- Morning: Optional Golden Monkey Trekking—a much lighter, fun hike to see these energetic, beautiful primates—or take a scenic drive to the nearby Twin Lakes (Burera and Ruhondo).
- Afternoon: Drive back to Kigali. If time allows, browse local craft markets for souvenirs before heading to the airport for your evening flight.
