When is the Best Time for Gorilla Trekking? (2026 Monthly Guide)

The Best Time for Gorilla Trekking

The best time for gorilla trekking is during the dry seasons: June to September and December to February. During these months, trails are drier and easier to navigate, and the skies are clearer for photography.

  • Peak Season (Best Weather): June, July, August, and September.
  • Short Dry Season: January and February.
  • Low Season (Best for Budget): March to May and October to November.

Choosing Your Window: When is the Best Time for Gorilla Trekking?

Deciding when to visit the mountain gorillas is just as important as choosing where to go. While the primates are present in their natural habitat year-round, the equatorial weather of East Africa can significantly impact your experience.

At Active Uganda Safaris, we’ve helped thousands of trekkers navigate these seasons. Whether you are looking for easy trails or budget-friendly luxury, here is the breakdown for 2026.

What is the Best Time for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda?

In Uganda, the best time for gorilla trekking falls within the two dry seasons. Because Bwindi is an “Impenetrable” rainforest, the lack of heavy rain makes the forest floor much more manageable.

  • June to September: This is the longest dry window. It is ideal for those combining a gorilla trek with a savannah safari in Queen Elizabeth National Park.
  • December to February: A “short dry” season that is perfect for escaping the northern hemisphere’s winter. The forest is still lush from the November rains, but the trails are firming up.
  • The “Emerald” Season (March–May): While these are the wettest months, adventurous travelers benefit from lower lodge rates and fewer crowds.

When is the Best Time for Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda?

The best time for gorilla trekking in Rwanda mirrors Uganda’s climate but with a slight altitude difference. Volcanoes National Park sits higher, meaning it can be cooler and cloudier.

  • June to mid-September: These are the driest months in Rwanda, offering the best visibility for photographers.
  • Late September to November: You will encounter short afternoon rains, but the “shoulder season” offers excellent permit availability.
  • December to early March: A fantastic window for clear views of the Virunga Volcanoes.

How Difficult is Gorilla Trekking in the Dry vs. Wet Season?

Many travelers ask, “How difficult is gorilla trekking?” and the answer depends heavily on the month you choose.

Season Difficulty & Trail Conditions
Dry Season Difficulty: Moderate
Conditions: Firm ground, easier to grip, and less undergrowth.
Wet Season Difficulty: Strenuous
Conditions: Slippery mud, thick vegetation, and more physical effort needed.

Regardless of the season, the difficulty is managed by park rangers who assign gorilla families based on your fitness level. In 2026, we still recommend hiring a porter ($20) to assist with balance during the muddier months of April and November.

Summary: Peak Season vs. Low Season

  • Peak Season (June–Aug / Dec–Jan): Best for weather and easy hiking. Permits must be booked 6–10 months in advance.
  • Low Season (April–May / Nov): Best for budget-conscious travelers and those seeking solitude. You can often book permits with shorter lead times.
