How Close Can You Get to Gorillas? 2026 Guidelines

How Close Can You Get to Gorillas? Official Gorilla Trekking Distance 2026

In 2026, the direct answer to “How Close Can You Get to Gorillas?” is  you must maintain a distance of 10 meters (approximately 32 feet)  from gorillas. This rule is strictly enforced in Uganda’s Bwindi and Mgahinga, as well as Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park.

  • Standard Distance: 10 Meters.
  • Reason for Distance: To prevent the transmission of human respiratory diseases and to avoid stressing the animals.
  • Mask Requirement: Travelers must wear a medical face mask when in the presence of the gorillas.
  • If a Gorilla Approaches: Stay calm, crouch down, and follow your ranger’s instructions—do not move away rapidly or touch them.

The 10-Meter Rule: Why Distance is Critical in 2026

One of the most common questions we receive at Active Uganda Safaris is: “How close can you get to gorillas?” While the experience feels incredibly intimate, there are strict conservation protocols in place to protect the mountain gorillas, who share over 98% of our DNA.

As of 2026, the minimum viewing distance has been updated to 10 meters. This change from the previous 7-meter rule ensures an extra layer of safety against zoonotic diseases (illnesses that jump from humans to animals).

Why Can’t I Get Closer to the Gorillas?

Maintaining a 10-meter gap is not just about human safety; it is primarily about the survival of the species.

1. Health and Disease Prevention

Because gorillas are so closely related to us, they are highly susceptible to human illnesses like the common cold, flu, and other respiratory infections. What might be a minor cough for a human could be fatal for a gorilla.

2. Behavioral Respect

Mountain gorillas are wild animals. Even though the families you visit are habituated (accustomed to humans), they still require personal space. Maintaining distance prevents the silverback from feeling the need to defend his family, ensuring the group remains relaxed and continues their natural behaviors like grooming and feeding.

What Happens if a Gorilla Approaches Me?

Mountain gorillas do not understand the 10-meter rule! Occasionally, a curious juvenile or even a silverback may walk directly toward you. If this happens:

  • Stay Still and Calm: Do not run away, as this can trigger a chase instinct.
  • Crouch Down: Lowering your height shows the silverback that you are submissive and not a threat.
  • Avoid Direct Eye Contact: Staring can be interpreted as a challenge or a sign of aggression.
  • Follow the Ranger: Your guide will quietly signal you to move back slowly to re-establish the required distance.

2026 Photography Tips from a Distance

You don’t need to be right next to a gorilla to get a world-class photo.

  • Lens Choice: We recommend a lens with a focal length of at least 70mm to 200mm.
  • Disable Flash: Flash is strictly prohibited as it startles the gorillas and can provoke a charge.
  • Stay Low: Often, the best shots are taken from a crouching position, capturing the gorillas at eye level.
